Absolute Magic by Derren Brown

Absolute Magic is an essential read for any magician, but is targeted mostly at those working in a close-up capacity. The book was written as Derren Brown made his transition to mentalism, so its more a summation of things he learnt as a close-up magician than a big reveal of his mentalism and mind reading ideas.

The book contains no effects at all as such (You’ll need a copy of his Pure Effect book for that), but instead concentrates on what makes a good presentation, a good performance and what really makes magic ‘magical’.

The advice he gives on professionalism and rappor in a close-up magic environment may not be as exciting as reading about a brand new effect, but it is just as important. Infact, its more important. Its a part of the learning process most often ignored, but these are the skills that will move you from simply a mediocre (or worse!) magician to a professional performer and entertainer.

With this book and three solid routines practiced solidly, you may well have all you ever need to become successful in the magic business.
